What does “octane number” mean and why does it matter?
The tendency of a hydrocarbon fuel, such as gasoline, to knock is measured by its octane number. Lower numbers denote a greater knock tendency; higher numbers denote greater knock control. “Knock” is an uncontrolled and explosive ignition of fuel in the combustion chamber. It causes a knocking or pinging sound, robs the engine of power and, left unchecked, causes serious engine damage. Knock may be eliminated with the appropriate octane number.

Octane Boost Q & A:
In using octane boosters, when the product says it increases the octane, say 4 points, I and many others assumed it means an increase of 87 to 91, as an example. However, in the July 2012 issue of Car Craft, Jeff Smith in his “Ask Anything” column (p.45) says that it would increase octane from 87 to 87.4. My question:
1. Is this generally a true statement? 2. Is this true of competitor’s products? 3. Is this true of AMSOIL Octane Boost?
Thank, Paul Hill
AMSOIL: A complicated, unofficial system used within the industry to evaluate octane increase can greatly confuse this issue, allowing some additive manufactures to artificially strengthen their marketing claims. Generally, increasing octane by one octane unit means increasing it from 87 to 88, while increasing octane by one point means increasing it from 87 to 87.1. AMSOIL Octane Boost performance is measured in units; a four-unit octane increase brings 87 octane fuel to a 91 octane fuel.
